Nearly 300 health care providers in Louisiana are receiving COVID-19 vaccines for public distribution this week as the state continues to expand access to the shots.
Louisiana's Department of Health is shipping out more than 58,000 doses of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines to pharmacies and other healthcare providers across the state this week.
Both vaccines require two-dose regimens, with Moderna’s variety requiring a second shot 28 days after the first and Pfizer-BioNTech’s requiring the second shot to be administered 21 days after the first inoculation.

The state is shifting its weekly supply of vaccines from hospitals and long-term care facilities in favor of expanding access to 298 public health providers, particularly in more rural parts of the state. Some pharmacies received nearly 1,000 vaccine doses as part of the shift, though a full list of how many doses each pharmacy received was not available Wednesday.
This week’s increase builds on the 209 facilities given vaccines for public distribution last week. Appointments are required for vaccinations at all facilities, and LDH is urging residents not to go to the pharmacies without an appointment.
Long-term care facilities across the state have received more than 93,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines prior to the start of this week, or about 30% of vaccine doses distributed to the state, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.
As of Tuesday, 267,720 Louisianans have been given their first shot of either vaccine, and 35,589 of those have gotten their second shot to complete their immunization.
The Health Department is also moving away from sending doses of the vaccines to hospitals, opting instead to prioritize pharmacies and other healthcare providers spread across the state, a move that caused disruption for vaccination appointments scheduled by Ochsner Health System and Ochsner Lafayette General for this week.

The shift also comes after Ochsner and Lafayette General announced that their patients would be prioritized to get appointments for the hospitals’ excess vaccines. The Department of Health warned providers last week not to prioritize their own patients for vaccination or they may risk getting future distributions.
While the state is expanding the availability of the vaccines to more healthcare providers in all of the state’s 64 parishes, the criteria to qualify to be vaccinated will not change this week as the state will remain in Phase 1B, Tier One of its vaccine distribution plan, which LDH estimates includes 640,000 people.
Phase 1B, Tier One includes:
- Persons ages 70 years or older
- Outpatient clinic providers and clinic staff
- Urgent care clinic providers and staff
- Community care clinic providers and staff
- Behavioral health clinic providers and staff
- Dialysis providers, staff and clients
- Home health service providers, direct support workers and recipients
- Dental providers and staff
- Students, residents, faculty and staff of allied health schools
In Acadiana, 42 pharmacies will receive vaccines this week, an increase from 30 locations last week. A list of Acadiana locations follows below.
